The Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao - The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao opened its doors to the public in October 1997. It is one of the most important centres of modern and contemporary art in the world. The outstanding design of the building by Frank O. Gehry makes the Guggenheim in Bilbao one of the most significant constructions of the 20th century. It is a huge futuristic structure and a 10-foot dog made from flowering plants by the American artist Jeff Koons guards the entrance. The Balearic Islands - The Balearic Islands lie just off the eastern Spanish mainland. They are made up of four main islands – Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Each island has its own distinct personality and charm. | | Shopping in Spain | Spain has an ample supply of very high quality leather and leather goods ranging from the smallest purse or handbag to leather furniture. Look out for the large factory outlets although watch the prices. You may find the range of goods better but the prices will be higher than those in the small shops. the Barcelona Spain shopping line you'll find a huge selection of shops including many of the big names like Versace, Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Bally, Cartier and Calvin Klein to name but a few. | | Spain Cuisine | Spain food ranges from cheese and olives to squid or meat delicacies and are priced accordingly. Many of the specialities of Spanish cuisine are based on seafood, although regional specialities are easier to find inland than along the coast. In the northern Basque provinces, there is cod vizcaina or cod pil-pil; angulas, the tasty baby eels from Aguinaga; bream and squid. Asturias has its bean soup, fabada, cheeses and the best cider in Spain, and in Galicia there are shellfish, especially good in casseroles, and a number of regional seafood dishes such as hake a la Gallega. | | Weather | The climate of Spain is extremely varied. The northern coastal regions are cool and humid, with an average annual temperature of 14°C (57°F); temperatures at Bilbao range from an average of 10°C (50°F) in January–March to 19°C (66°F) during July– September. The central plateau is cold in the winter and hot in the summer; Madrid has a winter average of about 8°C (46°F) and a summer average of 23°C (73°F). In Andalucía and the Levante, the climate is temperate except in summer, when temperatures sometimes reach above 40°C (104°F) in the shade.
