Nainital Hill Station - Rejuvenating, Scenic Nainital

Elevated at an average of 2,084 m above sea-level, Nainital stands tall in the Kumaon hilly region of Uttaranchal.  This unique hill resort is surrounded by mountains and has a huge lake.  It's steeped in mythology; it is believed that when Lord Shiva was carrying his consort's body, one of her eyes fell down, giving birth to the eye-shaped Naini lake.

Developed by the Britishers and once the summer capital of Uttar Pradesh, Nainital has natural spring waters near Gufa Mahadev, where tourists often bathe before visiting nearby temples. There are temples aplenty - Hanumangarhi, Sheetladevi and Sri Krishnapur, besides others.

The cable car takes tourists to Snow View Point at 2,260 m, which offers a scintillating view of the glittering Himalayan range and is best visited in October-November.Yachting, horse-riding and trekking, or walking leisurely through the beautiful landscape, breathing in the fresh air, is an enriching experience. The rejuvenating climate has cured many suffering from lung diseases.

Part of the lake region, Nainital has many other lakes nearby, all frequented by tourists.March-June and September-November are the best time to visit, though those who love snowfall visit it during the freezing months of December-February as well. Woollens are required throughout the year.
