Mizoram lies
in the southernmost outpost of North Eastern India,
the land of the Blue Mountains. Manipur, Assam and Tripura
bind the northern end of this little island of tranquility
with neighbouring countries Myanmar and Bangladesh nestling
most of the state between them.
Tourism
Mizoram
is a land of rolling hills, rivers and lakes. As many
as 21 major hills ranges or peaks of different heights
run through the length and breadth of the state, with
plains scattered here and there. Lakes are scattered
all over the state, but the most important are Palak,
Tamdil, Rungdil, and Rengdil. Also, Tlawng (also known
as Dhaleswari or Katakhal), Tut (Gutur), Tuirial (Sonai)
and Tuivawl are the most important and useful rivers
of the state.
Weather
Mizoram
has a mild climate. It is generally cool in summer and
not very cold in winter. During winters, the temperature
varies from 11ºC to 21ºC and in summer it varies between
20ºC to 29ºC. The entire area is under the regular influence
of monsoons. It rains heavily from May to September
and the average rainfall is 254 cm, per annum.

of Tourist Interest
Bung:
Bung is a beautiful picnic spot which is 15 km away
from Aizawl.
Paikhai: Paikhai is a quiet and
enchanting picnic spot.
Tamdil Lake: Situated near Saitual
village, this natural lake, 85 km from Aizawl, is
in the midst of virgin forests that offer an ideal
picnic spot with facilities for boating for tourists.
Kolasib: The town of Kolasib lies
half way between Silchar and Aizawl and is a natural
stopover on the way. 30 km west of Kolasib is the
Bairabi Hydel project. Fishing in the Tlawng river,
the longest river in the state is and exciting experience.
Vantawng Water falls: Located near
Thenzawl town and 142 km away from Aizawl, this fall
is surrounded by lush green tropical forest filled
with bamboo groves. The height of the fall is around
750 ft.
Champhai: At a distance of 192 km
away from Aizawl, Champhai is a sub-divisional headquarters
on the Indo-Myanmar border. It is a bustling commercial
town and a developing venue for Indo-Myanmar border
trade. Tourists can have a bird's eye view of the
hills of Myanmar from Champhai and its surrounding
hills. 5 km away from champhai is the Ruantlang village
where glimpses of the ancestral way of like of the
Mizos can still be seen.
Lunglei: 235 km away from Aizawl,
Lunglei is the district headquarters of south Mizoram.
It is a beautiful hill station rich in flora. This
rapidly developing town is an excellent base to visit
the interiors of south Mizoram.
Phawngpui Peak: 300 km from Aizawl,
Phawngpui peak popularly known as 'Blue Mountains'
is the highest peak in Mizoram. It is situated at
a height of 2165 metres and is a garden of orchids,
medicinal herbs, and wild flowers. The Peak is open
only to trekkers and hikers.
Saiha: Saiha, 388 km south of Aizawl,
is a day's journey by bus. The last lap of the journey
ends by a ferry / boat as one has to cross Chhimptuipui
River to reach Saiha. Forty-five km from Saiha tucked
away in the mountains, lake Palak is said to be the
home of a mythical serpent wearing a ruby crown. With
its picturesque landscape and a number of streams,
the area is an ideal destination for hiking, angling
etc.
The state is also home to many Wildlife Sanctuary
and National Parks. Phawngpui National Park, Murlen
National Park, Ngenpui Wildlife Sanctuary, Lengteng
Wildlife Sanctuary, Tawi Wildlife Sanctuary, Palak
Wildlife Sanctuary and Dampa Tiger Reserve are the
places which attracts all wildlife lovers.
Festivals
& Events
The
major festivals of the Mizos are Chapchar Kut(March),
Mim Kut & Pawl Kut (November/December) and Thalfavang
Kut (November). Since the majority of the population
is Christian, Christmas is one of the most important
events of the Mizos. This festival is usually celebrated
from 24th December to 26th December. Christmas Eve is
celebrated on the 24th followed by celebrations in the
church on the 25th of December. On the last day a great
feast is organized where everyone from children to adults
take part with great fervor and festivities.
When
to Go
The
best time to visit Mizoram is between October to March.
