The winter capital of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala [spiritual abode] is now synonymous with the Dalai Lama and thousands of his Tibetan followers.Having an average elevation of 1,457 m, Dharamshala is located in the Kangra valley overlooking the Dauladhar range, nestled amidst thick deodar and pine forests. Its’ divided into two parts –lower and upper (McLeodganj), which experiences snowfall, while lower Dharamshala just gets hail.

There is plenty worth exploring in the town, while the Dal Lake, 2 km from McLeodganj, is an ideal picnic spot. Jwalamukhi and Chamunda Devi are two famous temples located here. The hot springs of Tatwani, Machhrial’s huge waterfall, the ancient shrine of Bhagsunag with a waterfall, Kunal Pathri’s rock temples and Dharamkot’s panoramic views of the Kangra valley and the Dauladhar range, all attract visitors.

The nature lovers delight, Naddi, is 5 km from McLeodganj. The scenic Kareri lake, about 22 km away, is surrounded by pine forests and pretty meadows. Triund, at a height of 2,827 m is the picnickers and trekkers delight, and leads to the snowline at Ilaqua, 5 km ahead. Dharamshala has several trekking routes, some arduous through steep gorges and almost vertical ascents, and easier treks through scenic forests and streams.

Early April to mid-June and October-November are the best seasons to visit Dharamshala Hill station. Woollens are required throughout the year.
