Dehradun Hill Station - Pretty and Invigorating Dehradun
Lying in the foothills of mountains, Dehradun offers splendid views of snow-clad mountains and hills covered with lush forests. It has the Yamuna on the west and the Ganges on the east, Himalayas in the north and the Shivaliks in the south.
Referred to Dronacharya's birthplace, the Doon valley got its name due to the advent of a Sikh guru's son. Linked to the Ramayana and Mahabharata, it is one of the oldest towns in India and lies in the Garhwal region. Dehradun houses important institutions including the majestic Indian Military Academy and the imposing Forest Research Institute, lined by some of the tallest trees. It's world-famous for Basmati rice and litchis.
This popular hill station has plenty of tourist hotspots and facilities for rafting, trekking and rock-climbing. Resplendent with historic monuments and temples, Dehradun also has a Deer Park with a children's enclosure and the Rajaji National Park for elephants. There is a cold sulphur water spring having great medicinal value. Robber's Cave or Gucchupani is a picnic hotspot - the water disappears at one place and is said to appear near a temple further on.
Though it is very cold during winters and a trifle warm during summers, the climate is bracing and the serenely pretty Dehradun is worth visiting any time of the year.
