Sao Luis is the capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão. The city is located on Sao Luís island in the Baía de Sao Marcos, an extension of the Atlantic Ocean which forms the estuary of Pindaré, Mearim, Itapecuru and other rivers. São Luís is the only Brazilian state capital founded by France (see France Équinoxiale) and it is one of the three Brazilian state capitals located on islands (the others are Vitória and Florianópolis.The city has sea ports; Ponta da Madeira, Porto do Itaqui; through which a substantial part of Brazil's iron ore, originating from the (pre)-Amazon region, is exported. The city's main industries are metallurgical with Alumar, and Vale do Rio Doce. São Luís is home of the Federal University of Maranhão.

Main Church - Dedicated to São Luiz de Tolosa, it was built in the 19th century. It of great importance in the city's religious life. In it, the people still gathers for traditional festivities, which were celebrated already in colonial Brazil. Rosário Church - Built by the end of the 19th century, it has a prop wall that follows along the Carvalho Road and that sets the kermesses and religious feasts are held. Pedreirinha Fountain - Fountain built in lath-and-plaster over a regional stone foundation. It was erected in the 19th century and built in an eclectic style, predominating the gothic decadent style. Altos do Cruzeiro - Highest point of the town, allowing visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire region.

The handicraft of São Luís do Paraitinga is rich and varied. In highlight, the ceramics, in the utilitarian and figurative form, legate inheritance of the indigenous culture, and much presented in the region; wood works produced manually by craftsperson's; workmanship of the oratories and sculptures of religious and ludic character, such as the violas and violins; basketry, or braided work, also very much present in all districts of the city, with their utilitarian and decorative function; embroidery, tricot and crochet, traditional arts of the region; and the production of paper pulp masks and rag and hay dolls.
